Born into a loving, wealthy German family, Katarina Von Rahmel, protected and cherished, becomes a prima ballerina but finds her career destroyed by the horrors of war. Betrayed by the Nazi officer she has married, she escapes a prison camp and joins her brother and others as they fight back against Hitler’s regime. In the aftermath of WWII, they continue their battle against oppression as Berlin teeters on the brink of a Stalinist takeover. Becoming estranged from her family, except for her Catholic priest brother, Katarina abandons her daughter and marries again to escape the difficult post-war living conditions in the bombed-out city. Her new husband objects to her continued anti-Communist activities and eventually is able to take her home with him to Hawaii to begin a new life, but Katarina’s terrible memories from the war and her fierce independence cause her unwitting betrayal of the children she would fight to keep.

The Star and The Cross book by Evelyn Turner is now my favorite all time historical novel. I love the rich descriptions and storyline combinations. This book somehow transforms you into a person on the streets of Berlin during the beginning of Hitler's astonishing cruelty and power over the German families of that era. The shocking evil is contrasted beautifully by the love of family members and friends. The depth of the emotion and understanding of real people living through these terrible times is portrayed in a way that affected me personally. I feel this book would be a great choice for high school English teachers to assign to their students which would give them incredible historical and social perspective on a war that was not so long ago.....I wish all of America would read this book so people would appreciate what a wonderful country we live in.

Enjoy the adventure! Paul Hudspeth.......Austin Texas Physics Teacher ............

. We must look at the past , so the past does not become our present. These were normal people in a time that they could not stand by and allow hate and death to continue because one man decided to hate one group people. It becomes a story of the aftermath of war , what they did to survive, lies exposed or kept secret, love lost, love gained, espionage that took them to the core of what bravery could be. Forgiveness, faith kept, faith lost, love of church and family. How do you stand up to evil and one family did and paid the consequences
This was a great read. It held my interest from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. It even brought back some of my memories of my tour of duty in Vietnam. It's a must read for all veterans. Evelyn is a brilliant author and is succinct in her style of writing.
I believe this would make a great movie!
Buy this book. What a story! These superlatives are well deserved. Ms. Malloy has taken family history and with a talent for imagination has crafted an amazing story. This is what elevates this book. It is not the usual World War II story--a rehash of places, people, and dates. It is a family history of events disguised as fiction to protect the privacy of those who harbor unsettling memories and fears.
What a great book did not want to put it down was absolutely mesmerizing. Knowing that most of the story was true really broke my heart I don't think any of us ever know with those poor people went through in Germany and Poland and eastern block during World War II
I instantly fell in love with the characters in this novel. The Von Rahmels characters along with all the others became so familiar to me from the very start. Evelyn M Turner made these people so real to me! Being a WW2 History buff I was impressed by the detail of facts and the research that went into writing this novel. Her descriptions of characters and events were so clear I felt as though I was watching instead of reading, even at moments I felt I was there! The story she tells is heartfelt! I felt every human emotion possible while reading this book. The Star and the Cross is written with heart and the words flow with ease. I know a novel is good when I miss and long for the characters after I have read the last page. Beautiful and courages, this story shows hope and strength, not to mention humility! Readers will appreciate the depth of the human heart and the love for family, friends, faith and humanity in this stirring story. I highly recommend this book! Breathtaking!!! Thank you Evelyn! New stories about the horrors and heroism from World War II seem harder to find, but with "The Star and the Cross," Evelyn Turner has brought forth a truly original look at one of modern history's most violent benchmarks. And it only increases the power of the book to know that it is fact-based-fiction, drawing heavily on the heavy fates of her own mother, uncle and other real-life models for the fictional Von Rahmel family. In the family's resistance to the Nazis, from helping escaping Allied pilots to undertaking resistance actions in Germany and other parts of Europe are personalized symbols of what war wreaks upon all who are affected by it. These are heroic people, and even in the tragic life that haunted the prima ballerina Katarina (based on Evelyn's mother) long after the war are all the qualities of PTSD and nightmares born of realities that most of us can barely grasp. This is an important book, I think, especially now, when echoes of totalitarian past and persecution of people based on their religion or nationality are growing stronger. And it's a lively read you'll not want to put down.
The Von Rahmel family encountered turmoil at every turn during the horrific Hitler’s regime and Evelyn Turner shares the horrors she learned early on of her own family’s roles they played in saving as many lives possible while risking their own. A gripping and disturbing story is told purely so that the reader can clearly grasp evil at work during a time in history, we pray, will never be repeated. Bravo to Evelyn for having the courage to put the awful truth of her own mother’s tragic life in writing. The book is mesmerizing and I look forward to reading the continuing saga, the secrets, lies and loves of Katarina Von Rahmel Malloy.
